Q.I have small holes in the leaves of my David Austin rose which is blooming well. Also in a red Geranium. Never seen this before. W

hat is cause plse Rose is Ancient Mariner in a large tub the geranium is in ground with lots of spiders webs about.

There are some beetles that have a long snout used to poke holes in leaves and suck out the juices for their feedings. They do not typically hang around except to feed so leave only the holes in the foliage as signs they have been there. The best way to get rid of them is to use a systemic insecticide spray or granules. That way when the feed upon the juices they get some insecticide that gets rid of them. I have been hearing more about holes-in-leaves activity this year, so it must have been a good year for beetles or weevils! Similar damage is done by the rose curculio and can be dealt with in the same way.
