d I try to get them out again and cover with layers of topsoil and plant in that or what should I do Most of my neighbours work with soil ontop of the clay base or have planters on top Yet I still try to quell the weeds to no avail it seems. Whatès my best recourse?Niagara

If you like the texture of what you have, then there are two easier ways to go about it. Before you start planting, take a clear plastic sheet and lay it over top of the area. Once they are dead you can remove the plastic. This will kill roots and seeds of anything that was in the area.
If the area is small enough, then you might consider boiling water. It kills whatever it touches pretty immediately.
