Q.I Have Been Growing Figs And Kiwi’s Since 2018.

Zone clarksville, TN zone 7 | John Munro added on March 2, 2025 | Answered

I bought figs at Lowe’s in 2018. I only get a leafy plant that has numerous stems, I have tried cutting stems to the ground, did nothing. tried adding fruit fertilizer, nothing has ever gotten flowers or fruit. My kiwis, I was told, both plants can be male and female? A couple of years ago. It bloomed before and fruit could grow, that area died and turned black. No fruit ever? tried replanting but nothing? Hav not started growing yet so photo is ?

Unfortunately, your photos did not come through. I am unable to see the plants and conditions around them. What you are describing could have a few different causes, though.

Sometimes, overfertilization can be worse than under. Before you feed, I would recommend testing the soil for deficiencies, overfeeding, or pH issues. This will let you know exactly what they need. Too much nitrogen or too little phosphorus and potassium will be the culprit, usually, but a soil test would confirm.

You mentioned flowers turning black and falling off of the kiwi. This could have a few causes, as well. That could be a sign of fungal/bacterial infection. This is usually caused by soils that stay too wet for too long. Then again, if you haven't confirmed the sexes of your kiwis, it could be a lack of pollination. You have at least one female, it sounds like. Here are some articles that may help:
