Q.pruning purple leaf plum

Zone Northern California, near Sacramento | Kaywiz42@gmail.com added on April 25, 2015 | Answered

I have already missed the time to prune my 1 year old dwarf purple leaf plum tree. Should I wait until next early spring before it buds or go ahead and trim it now? It has no more buds and seems quite top heavy. The tree was planted last year (in late spring). It budded for the first time in late Feb. or early March. All buds and flowers are gone now. There are shoots coming out low on the trunk and the growth is thick and unruly. The tree looks top heavy and leans a bit in strong winds. I’m afraid it might break.
