I have a three year old tree with twine around the trunk buried in the bark

Twine was used to hold the tree to a stake when it was very young. The twine has become buried in the bark. It is not visible accept at the point of connection to the long-gone stake. Is there anything I can do to relieve the tree?

Probably the only thing one can do at this point is to try and find areas where either the twine is somewhat exposed or just under the bark surface. With a sharp utility knife, cut the twine to help break the tight circular tension. Then if you had to cut into the bark a bit, treat the area with some Tree Wound Sealer to keep bugs from getting into the wound. Trying to totally remove the twine could do more harm than good at this point. Cutting the twine in a couple locations will allow for trunk expansion.
