Q.mature grapevine in a pot

Zone weald of kent--heavy clay! | Anonymous added on March 17, 2016 | Answered

Can I plant it in the ground to eventually cover my pergola? The area it would be planted in has a top 18-inch layer of hardcore and then heavy clay. I think vines like free draining soil and this is definitely not that. The old potted vine is about 6-7ft height from soil level. If I repotted it in a large pot, would it survive and would it be able to cover all or part of my pergola, which is approx 14 ft wide by 18 ft long? I think it would be better to plant it in the soil, but I am worried that it might get waterlogged.
