Second question: I’d like to plant for next year flowers that I can leave in the soil which grow to between 1 and two metres in height – they will cover a blank wall that is shady, partly in the sun and also in a lot of sun.

Without a soil test, it's hard to tell what nutrients may be lacking. It's easy and inexpensive to test your soil and you may be able to just bring a sample to your local garden nursery for help.
