fig tree branches look scorched and snap off

Fig tree and the ends of the branches look scorched and snap off – they are obviously dead, but why? I have an established fig tree in my back garden. I have noticed today it doesn’t have as many green leaves as usual and the branch ends are black and brittle. They snap off easily and are obviously dead. I don’t know why. The leaves on the tree appear as normal, some of the figs on the black branches have died and shriveled.
