Although it makes a very jagged cut, and puts it a little more prone to infection, this is still a common way to cut it. Just to mow it. I have done this before, but I do not like to make a habit of it, since it does increase the risk of losing clumps pretty drastically. but it is a very common way of doing it, as expressed here: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/groundcover/monkey-grass/pruning-monkey-grass.htm [1]
