fruitless mulberry trees

I have 2 fruitless mulberry trees in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I started to property manage it in the fall. The tips of all the branches, about 2 or 3 feet, have no leaves. It was getting watered from run off from the roof. Since then I have installed an irrigation system and is watered weekly. What is the cause and what, if anything, needs to be done?

The leaf issue on the branches may have been from environmental stresses. Cold weather in the spring, heavy rains or dry spells.

You can prune any dead or damaged branches anytime but waiting until winter is always a good idea.
