cutting strawberries

I didn’t cut any of the Strawberries plants prior to winter and now I have a bunch of dead leaves with a little amount of fresh green new growth. Am I suppose to cut everything down for all fresh growth? In other words, prune for the season? First full year of green growth only. This is the second spring now, and I’m really hoping to yield some yum yums. I covered with straw for winter.

It’s always a good idea to do normal spring maintenance like clearing out dead leaves to give the new growth some room, and you DO want to pinch the blossoms and plant runners the first year. You shouldn’t have to cut or prune the whole plant back. You can find more information about how to give them an “annual makeover” here: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/edible/fruits/strawberry/thinning-strawberries.htm [1]
