Can a lime tree regrow itself from old rootstock

I cut down a Lime tree 5 months ago and also removed many roots. This week after some heavy rains, I noticed a small growth with some very green leaves. My wife picked a leaf and broke it, and it smelled like lime. Can a lime tree regrow itself from old rootstock?

Those are sucker sprouts from the roots. As long as you remove these suckers as soon as they appear they will not produce enough carbohydrates to feed the roots and no more root growth will occur.
