landscape fabric around shrubs and top with mulch? What is the best way to remove or kill the grass? How would you suggest I do this project? I am an 84 year old female. No photos.

I think that you have the right idea! There will be no need to do extra work. Using newspaper, and mulching will be enough, but landscaping fabric really ads a layer of extra protection. I would give it several weeks to kill the grass, and let that start breaking down.
