Hydroseed Preparation

Hi I had my lawn re-installed last year, 2 days after hydroseed application we got a severe t-storm with VERY heavy rain that washed out a lot of the seed/slurry (our lawn is pretty sloped, so we had rain channels in the new soil). A lot of the grass did grow, but it had lots of “bald” patches. My landscaper finally come back to fix the damage, last week. My question is about preparation of the slurry that is hydroseed – the guys that came with the seeding machine, mixed the “green stuff” with the seed and water on-site. The water, seed, “green stuff” was only mixed for a few minutes before they applied it. Is that the correct prep? I thought the seed had to be soaked in water for a period of time – a day or two before application, rather than a minute or two. I’ve tried finding an answer on Google, to no avail.

You can leave it for a whole day, or three days, or until germination. You can leave it for just a few minutes, as well. Regardless, if you do time it with a light rain, soaking for long periods may not be necessary at all!

This is a highly debated topic, but you should use your best judgement. During the wet season, you can get away with much less of a soak.
