How to trim a gardenia

I live in NE Iowa. I have a Mint gardenia in a planter that I brought in last fall. I have kept it watered and in my basement. There are still some green leaves, but I am wondering if it should be pruned?

It is best to prune your gardenias right after the blooms have faded in the summer. The reason for this is because gardenias set their buds in the fall so you risk cutting away some of those buds if you do it now. At this time, I would recommend that you remove only old, dead, and diseased parts, such as leaves and stems.
