Q.How To Separate Zinnia Seeds From Other Plant Material
The column on saving flower seeds in fall was super helpful. But I was sorry you didn’t include zinnias. I always save them but am never sure which are the dry petals and which are the seeds, which I think look similar. Thanks!

To separate zinnia seeds from other plant material, start by allowing the flower heads to dry on the plant until they become brown and crisp. Once dry, cut the heads off and carefully break them apart over a tray or container. Inside, you'll find seeds that are attached to the dried petals. Gently shake or rub the flower head to release the seeds, which are small, arrow-shaped, and typically dark in color. To remove excess plant material, sift through the mixture, separating the larger, lightweight chaff by gently blowing on it or using a fine sieve. This will leave you with mostly clean zinnia seeds ready for planting or storage.
