How to replace lawn and above ground roots

We are in a drought area, watering only once a week or drip system. My front yard is lawn, plants and several trees. I would like to replace my lawn with either drought tolerant plants, some other type of growth. I don’t care for the all rocks, gravel and pebbles look. As well as my two trees that are planted in the lawn, roots are growing above the ground.

Xeriscaping is what you need to look at. While people frequently associate it with the gravel look, it is actually not meant to be that. We have several articles on it that you would find helpful. You can find them here:
