How to prune split rose of sharon

I have a mature rose of sharon that has split at the base. I inherited the plant so it has been allowed to grow out of control. How is the best way to trim it to save the plant and when should I plan on trimming/pruning it? I don’t want to lose it waiting until late fall.

If the trunk is split, it may be best to go ahead and do a major prune on the plant to help remove some of the weight on the injured shrub. You can then access it, removing half of the plant will leave the other half able to recover.

You may be losing some or all the flowering for next season, but the shrub should recover if the damage is not too severe. Taking cuttings and starting new plants is an option if the damage is severe enough to kill the plant.
