How to Prune a Mature, Neglected Fig Tree

Fig tree is 15+ years old, and has been neglected for 4 years. Base area is bushy and covers a space of about 15 ft. When and how do I trim tree and not hurt it? Tree was not watered and has a lot of dry branches also. Some fruit was produced, but seems to have dry patches on small fruit. Thank you.
