how to prune a crepe myrtle in summer

Question

I have a crepe myrtle and it grew really tall and all the blossoms have made the tree sag wicked bad. I’m afraid if the rain keeps up it will snap the trees. Would it be ok if I prune it in the middle of the summer? How would it affect the crepe??
