How to properly prune and grow award winning hibiscus plants

I just bought my first Hibiscus plant at Home Depot and replanted it in a fairly large planter. I live in Illinois so I wasn’t too sure if it would survive an “in ground” ordeal. While the plant took off and put out a lot of leaves and buds, none of the buds seems to blossom and the ones that blossom do not fully open up and fall off the plant within hours. Do I need to prune the plant down? I wasn’t sure of the risks involved with pruning during the middle of it’s peak growth. Please help.

Regards,

Bob..

Check your Hibiscus for one of the common pests that eat the buds. This article describes some of them and provides tips on how to eliminate them:
