How to propagate clematis

I picked up a young clematis at a local hardware store (on clearance) and when I was going to put it in the ground, I noticed the bottom of the stem was broken. Not sure if I bought it that way or if it happened after I bought it. Anyway, has anyone had good results propagating these in water?
