How to plant Dymondia and Thyme Elfin

Question

I was a bit frustrated when I went on the internet to find out how to plant both Dymondia and Thyme Elfin. I was able to get a lot of info about each plant but couldn’t find out how to space these plants. I purchased these in flats. I want to plant them asap.

The Thyme flat has 16 clumps of the Thyme that, if left alone, would probably end up growing together. Do you cut the ‘clumps’ like small plugs and simply plant them every 6-8 inches apart and then they will simply grow together? The whole clump seems to be attached to the dirt by its roots, so it made sense to me to cut it into plugs. Is that right? If so, how big of plugs?

The Dymondia flat has a lot of small plants but not too crowded. Do I simply cut the soil around each individual plant and place that in prepared soil?

You have the right idea for separating both your types of plant. The distance apart to plant the thyme is partially dependent on what kind of spot you’re planting in, and what kind of result you’re looking for, and how quickly you want the foliage to fill in. The growth is more vigorous in the sun, less so in the shade, but a basic rule of thumb is to expect each plug to spread 6 – 8″ around. Your dymondia plants sound fairly small, so planting fairly close together, 4 – 6″ makes the most sense. Remember, the farther apart you put them, the longer they will take to fill in.
