how to kill weeds in an asparagus patch

I have an asparagus patch that has a lot of weeds in it. Can I use some kind of weed killer on the patch? If I cut down the ferns after they die and put some kind of mulch on it for the winter, will this help kill the weeds?

You will just need to pull it up. There are some grass selective herbicides that can kill it in asparagus, but there are no organic solutions other than hand pulling. I would pull up as much as possible before adding any mulch.
