Q.How to keep hydrangeas from getting leggy

I have gorgeous phantom hydrangeas and they are showstoppers … but this year they grew so tall they could not support weight of the flower head. How do I prune and fertilize so they’ll be stronger and not so tall?

These are a panicle hydrangea so you can prune them in late winter or early spring before new growth starts. Here is a detailed description:
