How to keep ants out of patio pots

I would like to know what I can do to keep ants out of my pots and is it possible for the ants to cause damage to the roots of my plants?

You can get rid of them by treating your soil with a pesticide or by replacing the soil in the pot. Cornmeal is often used in home remedies for treating ants.
