How To Cut Back Branches

Question

I have a ruby redbud tree. it flowers first and then starts with green leaves and then they turn a wine color in almost a shape of a heart. the problem is it has become as wide almost as tall. almost looks like a huge ball and need to get a shape again as if it was falling in leaves. i dont know how to or when to take back the branches. afraid to just cut off limbs and have the tree suffer what do i do?
