If you are given a cross section of a plant part, how would you know if that portion is a form of root or a stem?

Not quite sure how to answer. To me, it would be about the same as the difference between fingers and toes. Stems would have nodes and end with a leaf or bloom, Roots would be white or cream usually, and have a tapered end. Stems can be different colors and square or rounded. Stems can be straight or curved. Roots can be squiggly, straight, curved or angled.
