How should I prune my fig tree?

I bought my fig tree in late summer of last year. I have not pruned it at all so far. I bring it indoors in the winter.

These articles are great but I'm not sure how they translate to the age of my fif tree. It seems like some of the branches are thick and I'm that if I cut them the tree will die. Please help!
