How Much Dirt Do I Put in a New Pot for an Older Sago Palm?

This palm is 30 yrs old. Was given to me and is winter in, summer out. The pot is plastic, old and cracked, but more the plant is huge. The trunk is 15″ tall and the fronds are huge. It is winter now in east TN and has overtaken my livingroom. The lady that had it can no longer cares for it, so I have it now. It is about 80 lbs and needs a new pot. What do I need to do?

What to do? Be happy that you have an “conservatory worthy” plant! An older gentleman told me a long time ago, “Honey, you can keep pottin’ up until you’re using a bathtub.” There does come a point when it isn’t possible to handle, find or afford a larger container. If you can’t find a decorative container that is only slightly larger than your plants current pot, consider using a nursery pot. They aren’t very decorative, but are extremely rugged, fairly inexpensive and are available in sizes up to 90 gallons. To find larger nursery pots, check with a local grower of trees/shrubs or greenhouse supply warehouse. Knoxville has two, Johnson City has one.
