Q.How much composted manure

Zone Northeastern Ohio. Zone 5? | Dean Smith added on April 25, 2015 | Answered

How much composted manure should I apply per 100 square feet of flower bed area? I am planting a gladiola bed but may alternate as perennial bed next year. Also, do you think tilled in wood mulch would be as good a fertilizer or better than composted manure?

For such a flower bed I would use 25 to 40 pounds of composted manure per 100 square feet. As much as 60 pounds per 100 square feet can be used if a higher nitrogen level in the soils is desired. Tilled in wood mulch is not as good as the composted manure, while it does help break up the soils and does provide some benefits, it does use up some nitrogen in the soils to help break it down.
