How long does it usually take an over wintered geranium to show signs of life? I overwintered my geranium in a brown paper bag. I have now repotted it after having soaked the roots for an hour. It has been under my grow lights now for about 3 weeks and nothing is happening. I see no green and the stems seem brittle.

Geraniums that have been overwintered may take several weeks to begin growing again in the spring, so it may be too soon to tell.

Tell me more about the care of the geranium over winter. Did you seal the paper bag tightly? When storing geraniums in brown paper bags, the bag should not be sealed tightly as air needs to circulate. Secondly, did you check the geranium every few weeks while it was in the bag to make sure it wasn’t shriveling or drying out completely? Throughout the winter this inspection needs to be made to ensure they do not dry out. If, upon inspection, the geranium looks like it is drying out then it should be sprayed with water.

I would also recommend soaking the geranium longer next time before planting as well – for several hours or overnight.
