Q.How Do I Remove Clay From The Roots Of Lifted Shrubs?

I have lifted shrubs so as to improve the clayey soil in the patch. Is there a method of softening and removing the clay ball around the roots?

Just soak it in water until it is soft enough to fall off. Just shake it once in a while, and once it is all gone, you can start fresh.
