How Do I Get My Cabbage to Grow Round Instead of on a Tall Plant?

My cabbage plants are growing up instead of round. Same with the lettuce. What am I doing wrong?

This sounds like it is a bit too warm for them and they are starting to bolt. Try to keep the soil cooler, this will help. To help keep the soil cooler, mulch heavily around the roots and keep the plants well watered.
