How/can I put a window in a backyard water garden?

I would like to DYI a small water garden (8′ dia) in my backyard with a window. How thick of plastic or glass would i need? Will I have a problem with ice in the winter breaking it ( I live in Indianapolis in)?

Do you need glass or plastic? I picture a rustic window frame without glass. You might contact a nearby water garden society or club.
