How can I kill/get rid of wisteria vines?

Question

We bought our house a year ago. The previous owners told us they had tried everything they could think to get rid of the vines. We pulled out as many as we could late last summer but they came back like crazy this year. We are not interested in keeping them and would love any pointers and advice on permanently getting rid of them.
