Q.how can I find out what zone I am in? I live in West Columbia SC

This information is available with a google search, which states that your area is zone 7 or 8 depending on your zipcode. You can type "What USDA zone is XXXXX (zipcode)" and it will show you, or you can use our map, which can be found here: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/planting-zones/usda-planting-zone-map.htm
