Q.How Can I Correct A Pruning Issue On My Lilac?

Zone 18964 | Arhammers added on July 29, 2020 | Answered

While pruning our shrubs and lilacs, our landscaper left a gaping hole near the ground in one of our lilacs. They removed the dead “trunk” now there is a opening in the area near the ground. Not only does it look awful, I am afraid that we will lose one of the four plants that are used as a screen.

More stems should grow from the base. I wouldn't do anything else right now. Wait it out and see what develops. It is correct to remove the oldest and widest stems and leave the newer stems. That one probably needed to come out for a while now.
