How bad do carob trees smell?

I have read that the carob flowers have a strong, bad smell. Do you know of some trees in the Phoenix area so I can find out “how strong” and “how bad”?

A little research says this is quite a foul smelling tree and probably not one you'd want shading your picnic area.
