Q.Houseplants Layer Over The Top Of Soil

Zone 07090 | Anonymous added on March 1, 2026 | Answered

Hi- Inevitably, particularly after repotting, the soil of my houseplant settles leaving more than the recommended inch of space between soil and top edge of pot. Is it always okay to place a layer of stones or bark to make it more of an inch? Would that be a no for some plants? Am I overthinking it and is a 1.5″ space is okay? THANKS!

The extra space is fine, or you can add more soil, small stones, or a thin layer of mulch or moss to conserve moisture.
