dieffenbachia Houseplant

I have an 8 foot dieffenbachia plant. After coming home from vacation, it had broken from the base at the dirt and was laying on the floor. I picked it up and put it in water. Can I do that? I didn’t know what else to do. Any suggestions?

The top of the plant may produce roots in the water, but this is not a reliable way to rescue the plant- it could take a long time and ight fail. The roots that are still left in the pot may regrow if you’re patient with them and give them only minimal water.

The most reliable method to save a plant in this situation is to regrow it from cuttings. See this article for how:
