For many years my hostas have done very well. The last couple of years they seem to be getting sparce and smaller. What have I done?

Something could be eating the roots. I would dig it up now wash the roots, inspect them, then pot them up in some rich potting soil with fertilizer for the winter. In the spring when they start to come up I would plant them where I want them.
