Horsetail Pruning

Your answer: Those are just old canes. They will need to be pruned out as they die.

I am a novice gardener, so when you say prune out,(dying horsetails) do you mean cut or do I need to dig them out?

You can just cut them at the ground level. Only cut discolored and dying canes.
