Horseradish Seeds

My father planted horseradish seed he collected form the horseradish we didn’t dig. What grew has black hard roots and orange to red on the inside. Have never seen this before. Can this stand be saved? Was it because of the seed being planted instead of crowns or roots? Any advice would be helpful.

Yes, it was due to the seeds being planted. Seeds will produce a combination of the two parent plants, and if the parent horseradish crossed with a botanically similar plant, the result will not be a horseradish. It is better to use root cuttings or seeds from a company that controlled the pollination to establish new plants.
