Q.Hollow Celery

Zone 80221 | thepopp added on May 2, 2025 | Answered

I’m growing Utah Improved Celery in an airoponics/deep water culture. My celery is still hollow. Water isn’t the problem. The roots are bathed in water every five minutes and fresh nutrients every week. The plants are huge except for the stalks being thin and hollow. Why the hell is celery so cheap?!

Celery requires high calcium and potassium to develop thick stalks. Make sure that the nutrients that you are using is much higher in potassium. Supplement calcium if that tests deficient. I like nutrients that are split out into their own elements. You can find organic dry nutrients to custom tailor to their needs. Otherwise, shoot for something higher potassium and phosphorus, than nitrogen. Something like a 5-10-10 will be good. Keep an eye on pH too. It needs to be 6.0 to 6.5 for them to properly take up nutrients. It could b e that they are running out of something before their next change, so check when you change the water to see if anything changed. Whether it be pH, or nutrient content, I would check. That will give you a good idea of what and how fast any certain nutrient is being used. Outside of that, temperature and light are very important. 150 watts per square meter if you are using LED for lighting. 60 to 70 F is ideal for water and ambient temperatures.

As far as hydroponics and aeroponics goes- It is far more expensive that way no matter the plant. Cheap celery is from areas where the environment is ideal without much intervention. Much like strawberries in my area. They get invasive if you don't control them. Here is a collection of articles that will give you some more information on celery:
