Holes in Bottom of Figs

More than half of my ripe figs have a hole in the bottom. What is causing this? What should I do? Can they be eaten anyway?

Most figs naturally have a small hole in the bottom where they were pollinated. But it is a pretty small hole. If this looks more like a insect bored in, it may be caused by a pest. Cut the fig open and check. There are several pests that can do this.
