Holes in Basil Leaves

Last year I planted basil in the ground and it grew very well; however, many of the leaves had holes in it towards the end of the summer. I then bought a basil pot and had it on my patio away from the basil in the ground, and again, the leaves got holes in it. I noticed a little black pinhead sized bug on the leaf when I harvested some. Can you tell me what the name of this bug is and how I can prevent it from eating my basil?
