Q.Hole In Tree Trunk

I have a young Conference Pear tree and something has dug/chipped a vertical slot about an inch long into the trunk. It appears to go into the core. I’ve attached pictures. Will this kill the tree or can I take some remedial/repair action? I have netted off the hole so hopefully no more damage can occur.

Usually, holes like this will cause no damage Patching until it heals, as you have done, is good. Here is an article that will offer more information:

You may have to strangle a bird or two, but keeping them away is difficult. Keep in mind that killing certain bird species carries a hefty fine, though. Here is an article for that:
