Hibiscus Outdoor Wintering-Over

We live in Virginia Beach, VA. We have moved to a much smaller home, and have no space to bring our Hibiscus inside. Two years ago we left it outside too late into the fall. It appeared dead, but we brought it inside, it went dormant, but is flourishing again. Now we have no choice but to leave it outside. It’s been in the same 4 gal. pot for about 8 years, about 28 inches tall now with about 8 trunks, and still flowers. (the dormant plant was about 4 feet tall, with 3 trunks braided to about 2 1/2 feet). Any ideas as to how to prepare our treasure for a winter outside? Thanks for any ideas!

Placing plants near foundations or inside garages or sheds will help keep off the winter winds and will also allow them to benefit from the stored heat these structures collect during the day.

Wrapping the trunk and branches in burlap will help keep off the cold wind. The container should be mulched to help keep the soil temp stable.
