hibiscus

Are there different types of hibiscus that can be left outside for the winter? We do have a hibiscus plant we planted outdoors 3 years ago and it has come back beautiful every year. We live in upstate NY and our winters can be snowy and cold. We purchased 2 more this year and now I am wondering if I should bring them in for the winter. Thank you.

Yes, there are different types, namely hardy or tropical varieties. Hardy hibiscus plants (like the one you already have) need little care over winter and are hardy to zone 5 with no protection outdoors, though you may add mulch if you like. The tropical varieties are the ones that require growth indoors over winter.

Tropical varieties must be grown in containers and overwintered indoors. These plants will not tolerate more than a night or two of light freezes. Even one hard freeze (below 25) could kill the plant. If you are unsure of which ones you have just obtained, I would grow them in a container indoors just to be safe.
